Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism has almost half a century of history.

The University has at its disposal seven modern multifunctional sports facilities, an educational building and a residential zone for students in the Universiade Village, following the XXVII World Summer University Games held in Kazan in 2013.

Due to its infrastructure and highly qualified faculty members, the Volga Region State University of Sport and Tourism is a scientific, educational and sports center for young people from all over Russia and more than ten foreign countries. The educational and training processes take place at high-tech sport facilities that regularly become arenas for international competitions. These include a Rowing Center, five swimming pools, track-and-field stadium, tennis, badminton and gymnastics centers, ice arena, sports halls and gyms. The sports complexes are home arenas for student sports teams in 20 Olympic sports.

Material and technical resources of the university enable elite student-athletes to keep fit and combine training and educational processes. Distance learning technologies provide opportunities for maintaining the quality of education during the period of long-term training camps and competitions.

The university is successfully carrying out scientific, instructional and research activities in the following areas:

  • Scientific, instructional and biomedical support for the training of sport reserves and highly qualified athletes;
  • Scientific substantiation for sport selection and sport orientation for various sports;
  • Biomedical characteristics of health status of athletes at various stages of sport training;
  • Scientific substantiation of the effectiveness of various biomedical methods for restoration and correction of the functional health of athletes;
  • Long-term trends in the development of adaptive physical education and life safety;
  • Theoretical, instructional, psychological, educational aspects and current trends in the development of physical education and sports;
  • Tourist services as a factor in the development of domestic and inbound tourism in the Republic of Tatarstan.

University holds annual regional, All-Russian and international conferences with the publication of conference proceedings.

The University successfully operates the Educational and Research Center for the Training of Sport Reserves and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. The Center conducts scientific research in the field of sport genetics, molecular physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics, sport physiology, sport statistics and analytics. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine with the Educational and Scientific Center for the Training of Sport Reserves provide biomedical support for students – members of national teams during training and competition periods. They help athletes and coaches to design a proper training regime and the process of rapid recovery after the competition.

One of the most important areas of research and instructional activities is the research activities of students (RAS). RAS is extension and deepening of the educational process. It is organized specifically at the academic departments in the framework of student science clubs. Researchers and faculty members of the University administer the RAS. The Student Scientific Society (SSS) and the Council of Young Scientists (CYS) work together to attract students, graduate students and young scientists of the University to scientific activities.

Comfortable and safe conditions have been created for staying on campus and active recreation of nonresident and foreign students, graduate students and faculty members in the residential zone for students in the Universiade Village, which is located next to the educational building of the university and majority of its sport facilities.

The university is associated with its outstanding graduates: three-time Olympic medalist, shooter Svetlana Demina, Olympic champion and record holder in steeplechase Gulnara Galkina-Samitova, three-time champion of Russia as part of Rubin Kazan and Zenit St. Petersburg teams Alexander Bukharov, master of sports international class in marathon, Olympic Games participant Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova, Olympic medalist, skier Andrey Larkov, World and European champion, participants of the Olympic Games in swimming Alexander Krasnykh and Grigory Tarasevich, etc.

Volga Region State University specializes in the training of coaches in 20 sports, physical education teachers, sports analysts, functional training coaches, instructors and personnel for health, wellness and rehabilitation centers, sport managers and managers for responsible agencies, organizers of mass physical activities and sport events, experts in the field of tourism and services. The University is an international center for sports life. Sport facilities of the University regularly host large-scale competitions with participation of the world's strongest athletes. Russian national teams host training and rehabilitation camps at the University facilities. The partners of the University are International and All-Russian sports federations and other organizations. Despite the restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the university hosts up to 60 major all-Russian events per year.

Over the past 10 years, foreign students from 26 world countries have been trained at the University. Nowadays, the University employs teachers and researchers from 4 countries of the world. The University has 17 foreign partners, including international associations and higher education institutions. The University successfully participates in Erasmus, Fulbright, DAAD programs of academic mobility.
